Tubal Ligation (a.k.a. Female Sterilization)

Someone asked us:

I’m 23 years old and I’ve been on Mirena for 2 years. I am 100% certain that I want a tubal ligation. I am fully aware that they are not reversible, and in the extremely unlikely scenario that I were to regret having a tubal in my 20s- adoption is the motherhood option I would have opted for if I had wanted children in the first place. Does PP perform tubals? Is there an age limit? What is the cost?

Some Planned Parenthood health centers provide tubal sterilization, and some don’t, depending on staffing and facility capabilities and the availability of these services in the community.  Contact your local Planned Parenthood health center to find out about what services they offer. If they don’t offer tubal sterilization services, they may be able to refer you to another health care provider who does. While there are some age of consent laws for the procedure, they shouldn’t affect someone your age. In general, the cost of sterilization can vary depending on factors like where you have the procedure and your insurance coverage, but it generally ranges from $1,500 to $6,000.

Since (as you already know) sterilization is meant to be permanent (learn more about different kinds of tubal sterilization procedures on our website), health care providers want to talk with patients who are considering the procedure (especially young adults), to make sure they totally understand it. Some providers are wary of providing permanent birth control to young adults because so many things can change over the lifespan that might change people’s reproductive health decisions.  This is why you may experience (or may have already experienced) resistance from some health care providers.
