Vasectomy

Someone asked us:

Q. You guys are a great resource for women’s health, but I have a question regarding a procedure for men, namely vasectomies. My husband has been on the fence about getting one for years, so I’m wondering if you have any information or thoughts I can share with him the next time the topic comes up.

While a vasectomy is a much less complicated medical procedure than sterilization for women, the decision to permanently prevent pregnancies is no less monumental for guys. Vasectomies are meant to be permanent. No more making babies. Ever. Getting a vasectomy is not a good idea if there is any chance you or your partner will want to have a pregnancy in the future.

That said, there are a lot of reasons to love vasectomies, starting with the fact that they’re the most effective birth control option for guys — nearly 100%. Although the upfront costs can be a little high ($350-$1,000 – check with your health care provider to learn more), once it’s done, you’ll never have to pay for birth control again.  Vasectomies are very safe and beside a little discomfort after the surgery, there are no side effects that can come with other hormonal birth control methods.

As for advice on getting your husband on the vasectomy band wagon, a good place to start is with a healthy dose of accurate information. Some guys think getting a vasectomy will affect hormone levels and masculinity, sexual pleasure, or their ability to ejaculate. Nope, nope, and more nope.  It might also be nice for him to talk with his medical provider, the staff at your local Planned Parenthood health center, or any of his friends who’ve already gotten the procedure. Ultimately, it’s his body and his decision, but it’s great that you two are willing to talk about the shared responsibility of preventing a pregnancy.  Good luck!
