How do I talk with my doctor about using birth control for acne?

Someone asked us:

How can I talk to my gyn about changing birth control to help with cystic acne that I have? I’m not sure if I have a hormonal imbalance or not, but I’d like to know options.

Using hormonal birth control — the pill, patch, and ring to be exact — to get rid of acne is totally doable. In fact, lots of people use these birth control methods to say hello to clearer skin.

Your doctor or nurse can talk it out with you and help you decide which method is best for your situation. So let them know that you’re interested in birth control options that will help lessen your cystic acne. Different brands of pills can have different effects on acne for different people, so sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right one for you. Don’t get frustrated — when you find right one it’s totally worth it.
