How soon after sex can I take a pregnancy test?

Someone asked us:

can I use first response to find out if I’m pregnant 1 week and 2 days after sex ?

I know it may be frustrating to hear this, but a week and 2 days after sex is probably too soon for a pregnancy test to work. Even if it says on the box that it works before a missed period, it’s still most accurate after a missed period. That’s because it can take up to a few weeks for pregnancy to happen after sex. But if your period is late, it can’t hurt to take a test.

If it’s negative but you still don’t get your period within another week, take another test. If you get your period, you’re not pregnant. If you miss your period but the test is still negative, it might be a good idea to check in with a doctor or nurse to find out what’s going on.

Pregnancy tests work 99 times out of 100 if you take them after a missed period and follow the instructions. So take a deep breath and wait for the right time to take a test.
