October is Let’s Talk Month, which is when we take some time to promote the importance of family communication around sex and relationships. I’m not a parent myself, but I am a sex educator, I have lots of nieces and nephews, and I know a bunch of parents. So I was super stoked to see a whole new series of sex ed videos for young people: AMAZE

Here’s why I love them:

  • They’re free and online. You can watch them all on YouTube or have a more guided experience on amaze.org.
  • They cover lots of important topics. They’ve got videos on everything from puberty to sexual orientation to healthy relationships and more.
  • They’re for kids ages 10-14. You don’t see a lot of sex ed resources for this age group, so I’m glad to have a solid go-to I can give to folks.
  • Young people helped make them. A lot of the content and animation art was made by young people, for young people!
  • They’re a PERFECT conversation starter. So many parents and caregivers ask me for concrete resources they can look at together with the kids in their lives. Videos are great conversation starters because you can watch a video together, and then talk about it. There’s even info on the AMAZE website to help parents do this.
  • Educators can use them in the classroom. That’s right, there are also tools for teachers with activities to go along with the videos. As an educator, that makes me super happy.

Still not sold? They wrote and recorded a song called “How The Boner Grows” that’s catchy enough to get stuck in your head. What more could you ask for??

So this Let’s Talk Month, talk to the kids in your life about the important stuff: puberty, identity, relationships, and sexual health. More info, less weird.
