I love my pill but I’ve started spotting. What do I do?

Someone asked us:

Hi there! I’ve been on the pill for about 5 months and I have loved it. There are less cramps, and there is less bleeding. But this month, I have had two periods in less than 2 weeks. What should I do? Besides tell a doctor?

Glad to hear you’re (in general) loving the pill! While the pill is a great way to regulate your period, spotting can also be a common side effect of the pill. If you miss pills here and there, spotting/bleeding is a common side effect of that, too.

It’s also possible that your body may just still be adjusting to the hormones in the pill. If it’s still happening after a few months and it bothers you, check in with a doctor or nurse about it. They might recommend a different pill or a different kind of birth control. Just make sure that in the meantime you keep taking your pill, so you’ll still have protection from pregnancy if you’re using it for that.
