Is it OK to masturbate during pregnancy?

Someone asked us:
I’m having trouble finding information on masturbation during pregnancy. I just want to know if there’s any possibly harmful effects and if there are any health benefits to doing so.
To the relief of all who may find their sex drive on turbo during pregnancy, masturbation can be a welcome — and safe — way to release sexual energy and enjoy being in your body. Still, there are some things to know about masturbation and pregnancy.
First, if you have a high-risk pregnancy, caused by placenta previa, a weak cervix, or something else, your doctor may tell you to avoid sexual activity — including solo sex — to lower your risk of going into early labor. So if you have a high-risk pregnancy, talk with your doctor about what sexual activities are safe.
If you don’t have a high-risk pregnancy, the rules for safe masturbation are the same whether you’re pregnant or not. Masturbating regularly and often is totally fine. Not masturbating ever is also totally OK. Toys like dildos and vibrators are safe as long as you keep them clean. Same goes for your hands. Using condoms on your toys and washing them with soap and water will help keep viruses and bacteria out of the picture.
Most people who masturbate during pregnancy have no problems. However, some people experience cramps or Braxton Hicks contractions after having an orgasm. Though they may not be the most comfortable feeling, they’re usually not anything to worry about. Just make sure you contact your doctor or nurse if the cramps come with vaginal bleeding or fluid being released from the vagina, or if the cramps start happening in a pattern (like once every few minutes). That can be a sign that you’re beginning labor.
You can get more helpful information by talking with your doctor or nurse — like at a prenatal care appointment. Pregnancy can be a busy time, but if your doctor gives you the go ahead, don’t be afraid to get busy with yourself.
