Why do you think people are so scared of reproductive health care? Is it just a fear of change?

It’s natural to feel some level of uncertainty about the unknown –– and sex education in the United States is seriously lacking. According to the 2014 CDC School Health Profiles, fewer than half of high schools and only a fifth of middle schools teach all 16 topics recommended by the CDC as essential components of sex education. At the same time, for so many young people, the information they do get is filled with judgement and fear-mongering. We still have a lot of cultural stigma to overcome around sexual and reproductive health. Just look at the conversation around “WAP,” at the top of the charts –– clearly, we still have a long way to go to get to a baseline of acceptance and understanding around anatomy, autonomy, and pleasure. The more we can openly ask questions about our sexual health, the better we can combat that stigma and reduce fear. It’s important to have a trusted partner in these conversations. Planned Parenthood is here for you, whether you’re a parent, an educator, or just have questions.
