Story #99: Jonathan, Planned Parenthood of New York City Teen Advocate
“My name is Jonathan Atkinson. I’m 18 and I’ve been a Teen Advocate for three years. One of my favorite things to do as a Teen Advocate is facilitating BPBRs. For those who don’t know, BPBR is Be Proud Be Responsible. It’s a curriculum where we go out into the field and teach a set of workshops week after week. One week they may learn about sexual reproductive health, the next week they learn STIs, the next they may learn HIV/AIDS.
I feel as if I create the most impact by doing those because its a level of comfort… people can open up to me rather than talking to an adult. It’s great that Planned Parenthood has been open for 100 years. I know that we have a lot of naysayers and epople who refute Planned Parenthood even though we represent so much good for the community… I think 100 years is an accomplishment. Hopefully it’s only the beginning.”
To celebrate Planned Parenthood of New York City’s 100th year birthday, we’re sharing 100 stories from patients and supporters.
